Wipy does not work -> what to do?

Post by Jos » Tue Oct 06, 2015 5:49 pm

Hi,

I have received the Wipy + Expansionboard via the kickstarter campaign.

My problem is that I do not see the WiFi SSID.

What I did:

-> I took the Wipy with the expansion board attached (as it comes in the mail)
-> I attached a Micro USB (Smartphone) charger to the expansion board;
-> Now the green led on the expansion board is always green. The heart beat led on the Wipy is always OFF.
-> wipy-wlan* SSID is not visible (and I tried different systems, e.g. laptop/smartphone/etc).

What I tried:

-> Pressing reset button on wipy
-> Pressing button on the expansion board.

If I need to do something (e.g. power supply via exp board does not work, or I need to connect some pins), can you add this to the site. If it should work out-of-the-box with a microUSB charger attached, what can I do more?

Tx,

Jos

Hello Jos,

That's really extrange. Does the red LED on the WiPy turn for a second on when you press the reset button?

Just plugging it into your expansion board should be enough. Can you post a picture of you have it connected?

Cheers,
Daniel

Wipy LED is always off. See a photo at the link below. So basically the board/wipy as it came by mail with attached a microuab 500 mA charger. Led board on led on wipy off.

Any idea what can be wrong?

Hi Jos,

OK, I see the problem. We ship the WiPy's like that, but you need to take it from the breadboard area, and snap it on the female headers, so that it ends up covering the SD card. Orientation is the same as in the picture, you can also check the pin numbers on both the WiPy and the exp board and they should match. Tim is working on an unboxing video, hopefully this will help with this kind of problems.

Sorry for the lack of a propper quick start guide... working on it...

Cheers,
Daniel

Hello Jos,

A really short video how to mount the WiPy on your super expansionboard can be found here https://youtu.be/47D9MZ9zFQw.

Kind regards,

Theo

Hello my WiPy arrived today and I tried it right away. What I did was plug it into a breadboard and then I connected Vin to 5V and GND to GND. No the heartbeat led is constantly flashing red and the SSID does not appear on any of my computers. Did I something wrong?

Hi Marco,

I also replied to your KS comment. How is your VIN supply? Stable? Can it supply peaks of 300mA? When you say that it flashes contantly, how is it? Normally it should flash quickly every 4 seconds.

The supply I'm using is a 5 volt 1 amp supply. I checked it and it's very stable. The led though flashes very rapidly basically every second. I've tried some other power supplies and they had the same problem. I have even tried it on a bench power supply in my university. The only thing that worked was an almost empty lipo battery with 3.3volts and 230 mah.

Cheers Marco

OK, that's very strange. What voltage do you get at 3V3 when you put 5V on VIN?
