@fma do you have an metrics on what the effect of adding LEDs is ?
How many can be added ?
How is the speed affected ?
If you're sending a visible 'pulse' down a string of LEDs - what kind of duration are we talking about ?

I didn't make the kind of test you are suggesting (pulse), but it seems a good idea.

In my example, I think the main the problem is the computation of the color (TSL to RGB conversion), not driving the leds through SPI...
