100 users and counting

Hi,

just a quick note, we just registered user number 100. :)
Sure some of those users are inactive forever, some might be even sleeping spambots. However, it shows that we are on the way to create an active community around micro python.
The boards (if I am allow to say this) seem to be in the wild soon and from that point we should get even more activity in this forum.

@ the micropython, uC and programming veterans:
Please keep in mind micropython, by design, attracts a lot of newbies (in all ways uC resp. electronics and programming) especially by the time people start experimenting with the boards. Thus, please create a warm welcoming atmosphere and try to be helpful, even if RTFM or "Please learn the basics of python first" might be an appropriate answer. ;)
We will try to get a user wiki up soon and with your help we hope to fill it quickly, thus, you can guide beginners to the right documentation without much effort.

To collect the upcoming discussions around the usage of the pyboard, I just created a new forum, which should contain all related posts. If necessary we can split this into sub-forums for development, general user questions, hardware, software, etc.
Lets see how it works out.

Feeling talkative, so here're my 2 cents: we don't have enough activity in handful of subforums which already exist, so I don't see how fragmenting forum further would help (unless of course you decided with Damien that it's the way to go). Also, if you look at forum list, you immediately see that new one is named inconsistently with other subforums - no title case, weird double-hyphen..., that leaves strange impression. So, I would rather spend effort on breathing life in existing subforums first. For example, if I were a moderator, I'd move this thread: http://forum.micropython.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=65 to "Kickstarter / Logistics" area, which seems like a perfect fit to finally populate it.

@pfalcon:

Thanks for your feedback. I agree that a wide range of subforums is not good. Actually I made this clear from the beginning. For the same reason I rejected so far to create language specific subforums or dilute content across multiple special subforums. However, with the upcoming shipping of the pyboards, we can expect a larger amount of questions related to the board itself. Thus, I feel we should be prepared to collect them in a single place. Otherwise, you and other devs might start to get annoyed by all the pyboard-howto question popping up in the Micropython Development forum ;) For someone new, it is not easy to grasp that micropython is not exactly equal to the pyboard and its usage and vice versa.

I will ask Damien about the Kickstarter subforum. I created it because I thought there might be a lot of questions related to the Kickstarter campaign and the consecutive handling with logistics etc. However, if Damien does not see any benefits from his side, we might remove this subforum.

I changed the title of the new subforum to make it more uniform, as you suggested. The name is contributed to the fact that we still do not have a consistent usage of the board name. Often (e.g. during Kickstarter) we call it the Micropython board. On github we refer to it as pyboard. I want allow everyone to recognize what we want to discuss in this forum.

Thanks again for the feedback

Thanks! That forum also seems like good place where newcomers may look for FAQs, etc. specific to the board. Good thinking to keep it organized.

Does this advice regarding uses stackoverflow as a support forum applies well to micro python ?

http://meta.stackexchange.com/questions ... /3974#3974

And if not , isn't there still a place for karma based q&a ? it seems like a great way to motivate people to contribute, and to float the best content .

We definitely want to have MicroPython questions on StackOverflow, so if you think you can help with it (like, make sure that questions are answered), feel free to start PR campaign on it ;-).
