Why don't you start out with sockets? That's about as basic as you can get for TCP/IP communication. Download some software for your laptop like SocketTest ( http://sockettest.sourceforge.net/ ), open a socket and try sending some text back and forth. I'm getting the "ETIMEDOUT" message every time I try to use a DHT22 (AM2302) as well. I'm using a Lolin NodeMCU V3. I've tried with and without a pullup resistor. I ordered a couple, so we will see what this "rat" looks like. I like having the antenna connector as I put all my IoT devices in metal boxes.
