I bought one of those B&T RTL-00 modules, which is apparently almost pin compatible with ESP-12E modules.
Never got around to actually programming it yet... ... 0&p=23#p23

It can be programmed with Arduino IDE: ... rduino-ide

Compare RTL8710 with ESP8266: ... o-ESP8266/
The 1MB flash seems to be the only limitation.
