I think I've figured out my problem with the archive: its contents are in a hidden file.

I can open it by browsing the link quoted by @deshipu. Unfortunately the contents are not helpful. Like you, I think you need Mercurial to interpret them, but installing it is further than I can take it. Learning the rudiments of Git took me long enough Sorry.

You just need to run "hg update" in the directory that contains the ".hg" directory to get the files. Sorry, I didn't realize they archived the repositories only, I suppose it makes sense.
