Can the vendor stack be updated?

All ESP8266 boards running MicroPython.
Official boards are the Adafruit Huzzah and Feather boards.
Target audience: MicroPython users with an ESP8266 board.

I appreciate it's a binary blob but is there any mechanism for updating this on old hardware or is it baked into ROM?
