ESP-NOW and file transfers - have you done it?

I bought a handful of those ESP32-CAMs (I know this is the 8266, just stay with me). My idea is to power them with batteries, wake them with motion detection, take a low-res black and white image, and send it along over ESP-NOW to a central ESP32/8266, that would feed the data to a connected Raspberry Pi. Have any of you done file transfer with ESP-NOW? I'm thinking that the file will have to be encoded into a base64 string by the cam first, then sent, then decoded by the Raspberry Pi. I'm worried that even a small image will make this conversion and transfer untenable. I don't want to use wifi if at all possible.
