ESP32 - First time building micropython - Help

Post by ShanmugaCA » Tue Oct 29, 2019 4:01 pm

Hi,
I am trying to build the micropython for ESP32, followed the steps provided in the git. Built the exe under the /ports/unix and it is executing in PC!

While trying to build for ESP32, the make submodules is success, no errors, here is the O/p:
/micpyth/micropython/ports/esp32$ make submodules
Use make V=1 or set BUILD_VERBOSE in your environment to increase build verbosity.
Building with ESP IDF v4
Updating submodules: lib/berkeley-db-1.xx

Where as the make failed with multiple errors, here are the errors:

(venv) shanmuganathan@GHHPS3X2E:/esp/micpyth/micropython/ports/esp32$ make
Use make V=1 or set BUILD_VERBOSE in your environment to increase build verbosity.

I think this might be because you're using ~ to specify the IDF path -- see the note in the README.md:

Be sure to enter the correct path to your local copy of the IDF repository (and use $(HOME), not tilde, to reference your home directory).

Can you post a copy of your makefile here?

Sorry, I meant your "makefile" -- i.e. lower case. Please see https://github.com/micropython/micropyt ... /README.md

You should not need to modify "Makefile".

Specifically:
"You then need to set the ESPIDF environment/makefile variable to point to the root of the ESP-IDF repository. You can set the variable in your PATH, or at the command line when calling make, or in your own custom makefile. The last option is recommended as it allows you to easily configure other variables for the build. In that case, create a new file in the esp32 directory called makefile and add the following lines to that file:"

I don't think I've ever tried it with the IDF path inside the MicroPython path, but I don't see why that would necessarily cause problems. (Edit: I checked, it's fine)

Anyway, the build output doesn't match that "makefile" fragment (it has ~/esp in it). Can you do a "make clean" then try again and post the error.

Btw, you can use the </> button to format as code, or [ code ] [/ code ] (without the spaces)

I'm a bit confused though -- what's the actual path to where this is? Your prompt says "/esp/micpyth/micropython/ports/esp32" but then your "makefile" says "$(HOME)/esp/micpyth/micropython/ports/esp32/esp-idf"

Sorry for the confusion!
- I did the build using the just the 'make' and that called the Makefile (which is shared above)

- I really don't know how to run or call the 'makefile' which includes the Makefile. ( i am new to linux enviornment and the build systems)

Sure, here is the O/p after 'clean' & make:

When you run "make" it first tries to use makefile, otherwise Makefile. So by providing makefile, you can override the behaviour of Makefile.

When posting in the forum. i.e. to make it look like this

Code: Select all

output
If you select the text and press the </> button it'll add the tags for you. Instead of using ++++++ etc

Sure, here is the O/p after 'clean' & make:
That's a different error! So, progress!

I see you're using crosstool-NG. I use the toolchain downloaded from espressif - https://dl.espressif.com/dl/xtensa-esp3 ... 2.0.tar.gz

I will try and build with crosstool and see if I have the same issue.

One other option is to use docker. See viewtopic.php?f=18&t=7138#p40636

Thanks again!

Now, i prefer to use docker to do the customized build. Can you suggest me a one for ESP32 ?

See the thread I linked to, it has a full example. (Read the whole thread because there are some updates and suggestions later)

Note that you will need to remove the ESP IDF line from your makefile to use it.
