Tile36 RGB mode: CREE vs. WE

The Tile36 has a command to set the RGB mode to either CREE or WE. I realize CREE is a brand, and in some fashion a particular hardware technology of LED, but what does it mean to choose between CREE and something else at the software level, and what does WE mean with respect to LEDs? As far as I can tell, setting this command to its two different options has no noticeable effect on the device's behavior.
