This forum's behaviour has changed for the worse.

Post by pythoncoder » Fri Oct 13, 2017 7:56 am

If you select Active topics when logged in, until today the icon for each topic indicated if it contained unread messages. Now it does not. This makes it much harder to use. IOW it behaves as if I were not logged in, yet I can go to my control panel so it clearly has responded to my logging in.

[EDIT]
I've now spotted that topics with unread posts are identified by View first unread post text to the right of the icon, but a changed icon is easier to see.

Another problem: the buttons for editing, deleting etc. a post can only be identified by hovering over them.

Yes, I did upgrade phpBB to the latest version, v3.2.1 (up from v3.1.9), so that's the reason for some changes (and hopefully enhancements!). That "View first unread post" text is a bit annoying... but likely requires editing the phpBB source code to change it.

You might like to consider a more modern forum software like Discourses. I am running one for a few weeks now and I am impressed by it‘s features. Especially the spam prevention and trust mechanics plus more hierarchical than linear threads are nice imho.

Anyways, thanks for thee work on so many frontiers!

Changing the forum software sounds like a can of worms unless the messages from here can be imported. This forum contains a wealth of knowledge ;)

Not really much wrong with phpBB but the change they made now is horrid. (I'm not 100% sure it is just phpBB though, or rather the skin/style used). Anyway I'm fairly sure we are not the only ones complaining though so I guess it will be gone again in the next update.

I have a problem with the tiny icons for edit, reply, report, etc. Besides being tiny and coulored grey on grey, they are not labelled. So you have to hover over them, until the descriptive text gets visible. That' s not really convenient.
(Seen with Firefox on Linux/Windows, MS Explorer on Windows, no trial with Chrome yet)

Looks like you are using the we_universal theme for phpBB 3.1.x:
https://inventea.com/en/projects/we_universal

There is a version for 3.2.x here:

I updated the theme to we_universal 2.5.2 and re-installed the fontawesome font. I think all the problems are now fixed.

Re using a different forum software: Discourse looks interesting, it has a lot of stars on github (23k+) and even a phpBB3 import tool. But, as was mentioned above, it opens up a whole can of other worms (eg it runs on Ruby Rails) so for now I'd rather stick with what we have.
