Chinese Micropython Clones(?)

Post by bitninja » Fri May 04, 2018 2:53 pm

I came across this site... http://www.micropython.net.cn/ and was wondering what boards these are most similar too. Most of the site is in Chinese, so I can't tell very much. Are these Pyboard compatible clones... or are they more like the STM Discovery boards?

There are couple of pyboard compatible boards like this or this one and some direct clones

Look at the Google translated page
Same for TPYBoard_V102

What is the moral/legal status of these? Illegal, stolen intellectual property or legitimate reuse of open-licensed designs. Not sure the licensing status of pyboard.

The build quality was so-so in my opinion, as I expected. But it does work with everything I've tried so far.

Could you give more details about "so-so" build quality rating, please.

Don't get me wrong, I am happy with the board... it's just some of the finishing work like the headers... they were soldered in pretty quickly apparently...

Notice the angle?

And some of the soldering is kind of blobish.

It's not terrible by any measure... the fine-pitch work is good and the silk-screening is aligned well and readable... even at the very edges of the board.

An interesting test would be measure the current consumption after issuing pyb.standby(). A Pyboard V1.1 will take about 6μA. If they've used a cheapskate regulator it will be higher.

I don't have the equipment with me to run a test, but I can say that they seem to have used a "662K" regulator...
