I think I've figured out my problem with the archive: its contents are in a hidden file.

I can open it by browsing the link quoted by @deshipu. Unfortunately the contents are not helpful. Like you, I think you need Mercurial to interpret them, but installing it is further than I can take it. Learning the rudiments of Git took me long enough ;) Sorry.

You just need to run "hg update" in the directory that contains the ".hg" directory to get the files. Sorry, I didn't realize they archived the repositories only, I suppose it makes sense.
